Small, excellent reception, good basic camera phone

I bought this phone as a backup. I didn't need the camera, but I got the E315 for a good price. The main screen is very vivid. The external screen is not the best but acceptable. I am used to using a Symbian phone so the Samsung interface is quite cumbersome to use quickly. Also, it takes far too many buttons to do simple basic tasks (you can assign the pad buttons to shortcut to certain functions). The ringtones are loud but distorted at high volume. It will accept a datacable to connect to your PC, but Samsung sells this with software for $70 off their website. Look for other solutions if interested. GPRS (wireless web) for t-zones is quite good. Not as robust as a symbian web browser like Netfront or Opera, but it does have a good looking font and pages render fine. However, if it is a long page with some graphic images, scrolling becomes so slow it is impossible to effectively operate. Stick to text-based WAP sites and it works well. All in all I like the phone, but could not see using it as my primary. I'll stick with a Symbian based phone (Nokia 6600, 7610, 6670, 6620, Siemens SX1, etc.)

Yes! You can use your own mp3's for ringtones

Just got the phone so here are a few of my first impressions...

1. YOU can use YOUR mp3's as ringtones... I havn't heard this discussed before. It took me a few hours to get it working right. Im using a mac, and isync (with bluetooth) works well. With Bluetooth running on both, and after setting it up in the bluetooth preferences on the mac, from the bluetooth icon on the top right of the menu bar you choose Browse device and select the phone. From here you can drag and drop audio, picture and movie files from the computer to the phone and vice versa. mp3's are a little trickier. I used a program called audion to open up an mp3 in its editor. From here you can erase portions of the song you dont need and save it as an mp3 for a ringtone. This still results in a large file size, so after you save this smaller version, you can open it again in audion and use the encode feature to reduce the recording quality, from say 128 bit to 64 bt, and adjust the stereo setings. From this point, you just have to drag the encoded file from where it was saved on your computer to the bluetooth file transfer browser. This sure beats paying $2-$3 for a crap ringtone, especially when you can buy a full song on itunes for $0.99. I had tried using quicktime pro to select the song portion i wanted, but was only able to save the file in a .mov or .mp4 format. Both of these versions are not recognized by the phone.

2. The phone book really sucks, I mean I could not imagine a worse one. I 'upgraded' from a siemens sl56 that is 2 yrs old with a much better phone book. You can not save multiple numbers to the same person (they are copied and show up as duplicate names with the differing numbers in your address book) You can not input physical addresses, or birthdays.

3. The display is completely illegible in direct sunlight (a problem if you use your phone outside in a sunny area such as florida) This is in contrast to my sl56, the display of which is just as legible in the dark as in full sun.
I thought of returning the phone when i discovered that you can not email youself riingtones (midi) files ( according to cingular) No way was I going to pay for ringtones. In the old days, before cell phones, you could easily find midi versions of tons of free midi songs on the net. These are the same type used by cell phones today.

4. Regarding the size, it is a little bulky, and not easily opened and closed with one hand. In contrast, the sl56 slider phone was very easy to open and close with one hand and i never felt like i was going to drop it while opening it. I'm comparing it to the sl56, because the razr phone is supposedly also classified as an ultra small phone.

3 Flaws in Phone Functionality

As a PDA this device is great, but the phone has three major functionality issues that need to be resolved. I'm writing this in the hope that Palm will read it and make the necessary software changes.1. 3-Way Calling. When the second call of a 3-way is initiated, there is no way to end this call selectively - i.e. you have to hang up on both callers in order to end the second call. This situation will come up very commonly if for example you realize that you needed to call a different second number than the one originally dialed. With a normal cell phone there is a red hang up button that allows you to end the second call without ending both calls. On this phone there is no such functionality. The only hang up button is a "Hang Up All" button that kills both calls. I have found this to be extremely frustrating.2. Call Waiting. This problem is essentially an extension of the one I just described. If a second call comes in, and you choose to answer it, there is no hang up button to selectively end one of the calls. If for example you want to end the second call, and go back to the first call, you will find yourself unable to get rid of the second call. If you use the "Hang Up All" button, you will end both calls. If you simply say goodbye to one of the other callers without hanging up, the phone keeps one line open on hold, and double air time is accessed during the duration of the remaining call.3. Voice Mail Notification. Most business users are accustomed to getting an aural alert when there is new voice mail, and this aural alert can be set up to continue at some interval of time (say every 2 minutes) until a button on the phone is pressed to acknowledge that you know there is voice mail waiting. This phone has no such functionality. It lets you select any ring tone and volume for the voice mail alert, but there is no option to have it repeat itself until it is acknowledged. If you happen to be away from the phone when the first alert is made, you will never hear an aural alert. This is not a major problem for many users, but it is a big problem for people using the phone for an occupation that requires them to be on call, and they can't afford to miss a voice mail.

Lose my mind if I ever lost my Blackberry

I hated this phone at first. It was a gift, and try as i did to get use to holding a rather large calculator sized box to my ear, the phone feature wasnt happening for me. The more i played with it, the more i discovered just how awsome this thing was. I own a mobile entertainment company, so its a breeze to keep schedules open, log CC information from clients, send bulk mail to my employees, even get driving directions. I love the Memo pad feature as well. Now I can remember things id normally forget because i can easily take note and keep time. Not to mention the unbeleivable battery life. I have kept full charges for weeks on end. Chargeing is a sinch. Ive only lost full battery life 2 times and each time i was able to connect to my computer and in less than 15 minutes i had a full charge that lasts longer than the energizer bunny.. Ive been more organized with this phone than I have in my entire career. Three thumbs up!!

Best Phone for the money

I am in the same boat with other owners. Excellent phone for the money but the software that comes with it is VERY old. You hear that ATT!! Why you ship with an old software??? Because they want you to pay $$$ to upgrade through their service center.Anyway, After reading some of the reviewers here and they recommend me to get the tool to unlock and upgrade the software easily and cheap. check it out for your self ( if you dont believe me or do like me, read the past reviews.
