an excellent phone

I have used this phone (x105) about a year. I am very pleased with its quality and a long talk-time. The phone was amusing especially when I updated sounds and wallpapers with a data cable. Too bad, it is discontinued.

Is Palm, Inc., losing it's way??

This is my fifth Palm device, starting with the original Pilot. My employer contracts with AT&T Wireless for our mobile service, so the prospect of reducing the silicone baggage was appealing (formerly carried Palm Vx, Blackberry, and Sony Ericsson T68i).Unfortunately, the device has been a disappointment. The ergonomics are dreadful in comparison with the Blackberry, or a Nokia phone. The lack of notification when a text message (other than SMS) is a deficiency. The phone is unsafe to use in a motor vehicle, so I've had to activate a second, in-car phone & number. The original, largely Grafitti-based input functions common to previous Palms are much easier to use than the Tungsten's choice of the tiny mechanical keyboard or the tap-to-select on-screen version. The device is very choosy about where it charges. I have three cradles, plus the travelling adapter with 110V and 12V (cigarette lighter) connections. One of the three cradles won't charge it, and it refuses to accept juice from an auto cigarette lighter, either. I have not found the battery life to be a problem, as described in one of the other reviews, though.Web surfing is OK, some sites won't allow it access, but for what I use it for, it's acceptable. Being GSM, though, there are parts of the country where there is no coverage - I know this from my prior phone. Finally, after five weeks' ownership, the annoying wired earpiece necessary to use the phone feature hooked on an obstruction once too often, and evidently damaged the jack. Now, the whole shooting match has to go back to Palm for repair. All in all, I'm afraid I've pushed the technolgical envelope too far this time.

The LCD broke on me!!!

3 months and the LCD broke on me. I thought this was a cool phone... well wrongly so

The downsides:

1) The camera sucks. It doesn't have good resolution at all.
2) The phone looks like a match box, just an elongated one
3) Lacks the class of a true Sony Ericcson product.

And now the LCD broke on me. I am not sure what I am going to do now... will I even get my money back or get it repaired under waranty?

Go For It!

As a former Pocket PC user (T-Mobile Phone Edition) I really appreciate the compactness of this phone. It's literally half the size and half the weight of my Pocket PC. This is a huge plus for a device which is constantly hanging on my belt or in a pocket.

I'd have given this an enthusiastic five-star rating, except for certain features which are available on Pocket PC, but not supported by the smartPhone OS. For example, eBook Reader, Pocket Streets 2003 (which was free), Acrobat Reader, my favorite Backgammon game, Outlook Notes synchronization etc. To be sure, some of these are just frills and others of these can be purchased as add-ons. So although I can't give this an enthusiastic five-star rating, I am certainly pleased to give this my enthusiastic four-star rating!

Go for it. I don't think you will be disappointed.
--------

I want to add to my previous review, that I've since discovered the excellent Speed-Dial and Voice-Tag features which allow you to quickly dial a number or launch a program by simply pressing a number (1-99), or by voice activation. It would have been nice if a hardcopy manual had been included with this phone, but if you'll take the time to read the PDF documentation on the included CD-ROM you'll find a whole host of excellent features which may not be obvious at first glance.

This SmartPhone just keeps getting better!

World's smallest Windows Mobile Smartphone
Call, email, text message or instant message - all from one integrated phone

Warning, Not a good buy!

I've had wireless devices for 20 years. This is the worst one. I have had to return my Moto V551 phone 2 times and replace the battery once. The first time was within the 30 day Cingular warranty for volume problems. The second was for volume and bluetooth not working. After 30 days you can only get a refurbished phone up to 1 year via the provided Cingular warranty.

- Battery Time is awful. I get about a day out of a charge.
- The volume level is too low. You can't hear callers.
- The camera/video quality is very low.
- Bluetooth to PC usage is cumbersome.
- When you open the shell beyond what is I find to be an uncomfortable angle to use, it feels as if it will break off.
- Your stuck with the case it comes with. No color options I am aware of.
- Official Motorola Accessories, cases, headset, etc. can be found at WalMart and at cheaper proces than the Cingular store.

In addition. Since migrating from ATT, I have found Cingular to rate at an unacceptable level for Customer Service, repair, dropped calls, return merchandise, hold time, customer side web site not functioning, etc.

It has been my experience that the "Sony T637" and just about any Nokia device are a better choice. Cingular is the best deal pricewise in my neighborhood but you get what you pay for...

WARNING - ROTTEN BATTERY LIFE! Great form factor!

The #1 reason to buy (and keep) this phone is the slim form factor. Let's face it - for guys who don't like to keep the phone on their belt like a pager, a pants or suit pocket is the only option. This phone is far and away the best one in that regard. I forget it's there a lot of the time. It is also built EXTREMELY solidly, and does NOT scratch easily, although the SCREEN scratches easily.

However, the battery life is terrible. I literally have to charge it every night after less than two hours of talking with bluetooth. You MUST get the car charger immediately. Even though I had bought one on the internet, I couldn't wait for it because the phone kept dying so I raced to a local cingular store for an intermediate car cord.

The Motorola HS-850 BT headset is great but occassionally loses connection w/the phone, which is frustrating.

The only reason I kept this phone is the size.

This phone was a waste of money

Besides the complete inaccuracy of the battery life meter, the tendency for the antenna to unscrew itself, and fall off and the horribly unintuitive UI for this phone, I have to say that the ring tone and volume contrils on the outside of the phone have to be one of the most poorly planned cell phone features ever.

I can't tell you how many calls I have missed or how many times my cell phone has rung at inopportune times when I thought it was on vibrate mode - and how truly frustrating this is.

If I could return his phone I would - and the next phone I buy will not be Motorola.

Great sometimes, horrible others

I've been using the 850 daily for about a month now and I'm taking it back. When conditions are ideal (I'm within 10 feet of the phone, I have excellent service coverage, and my ear with the 850 on it is toward the phone, no wind, no background noise) it works really well. When any combination of the parenthetical above occurs say goodbye to the clarity on both ends. I'm tiring of my friends saying take that stupid headset off, I'm getting every other syllable. I had high hopes, but the technology's just not there yet. At least not with this headset. I think the long boom headsets are bound to be better. That's what I'm going to try now. Fair warning on this headset. Looks cool, but who cares if it doesn't hold its own?
Product features:
Bluetooth wireless technology means that the sheer convenience of hands-free communication is enhanced with total freedom of movement.
Unfold the boom microphone, place the headset over the ear and a link will be established automatically.
This universal accessory encourages users to update, change and evolve because it is compatible with all other 1.1 compliant Bluetooth wireless technology phones by Motorola and other manufacturers.
Smaller Size, Bigger Power. This tiny powerhouse is less than 5 cm in diameter when folded and weighs just 20 grams.
Increased talk time of up to 8 hours and standby time of up to 200 hours.

Best Cell Phone I've Used

This is simply the best cell phone I've ever used. Sure, it has lots of features 75% of the population will not use everyday...if you're in that 75%, then spending the cash for this phone probably isn't for you. However, if you're like me and got rid of your landline phone and need a solid cell phone, then this phone is great. I really like the voice dial (it's built into the phone -- you don't have to pay Sprint's fees for Voice Command for this particular phone if you know how to use it) and the speaker phone. The battery life has been wonderful. I get around 2 hours of talk time per charge and I've gotten as much as 2 weeks of standby between charges. My advice is to look over the phone's features...if you will use 75% of them on a semi-regular basis, then this is the phone for you...otherwise, find you a cheaper model and save some money. (NOTE: I only gave 4 stars because I had a couple of bugs with the phone...like it forgetting my voice dial...nothing major at all, but 5 out of 5 and it's not perfect, but it sure is close.)
Product features:
This high-end CDMA clamshell phone is the first to add Push-To-Talk functionality
Equipped with a VGA still resolution (640 x 480 pixels) camera with flash and video light -- can also record video clips up to 15 seconds
Includes LCD color display
Features voice dialing, speakerphone, and call screening
Phone book can carry up to 500 numbers total -- plus email and web addresses

Good phone

I had mine for 20 months, granted the display just partially died but it received some hard shocks, water... and really, I did not expect to last for so long anyway. I got it for $49 and I think it is good phone, light, sleek, good microphone. 20 months of good services, it's time to upgrade anyway!
Product features:
External display shows incoming call phone numbers
Compact design with slim profile
Large screen displays up to 8 lines of text, 4 shades of grayscale
Supports downloadable ringers, images, and wallpapers
Full width keypad supports larger buttons, allows easy operation
