Audiovox 8610 Vox Prepaid Phone (Virgin Mobile)
Much improved over the 8500

I have had Virgin Mobile for about a year and a half now. I really am happy with the service. I used to be with AT&T on a contract but was feed up with going over on minutes and paying a horribly high bill. When I started with VM, I had the "Party Animal" phone. Decent starter phone. Then I bought the "Vox 8500"-which I lost about 6 months after buying it-, then the "K7 Rave" and now have the "Vox 8610". I only had the 8500 a short time, but in that time I noticed some shortcomings, which are listed below:1. Reception was not the greatest with the 8500. I have had about 9 cell phones in the past 3 years, and drive the same route to and from work every day. The 8500 got little or no reception in certain areas, where the K7 did. The 8610 isn't as good in certain areas as my K7, but is much better than the 8500, and in most cases I don't need to extend the antenna.
2. The address book/contact list on the 8500 was way too difficult to get to. I was afraid this would be this case on the 8610, but it's not. On the main screen, the word "contacts" is positioned above a key for easy access, then you call scroll through your contacts. Another reviewer mentioned the lack of voice dial. I never did get the hang of voice dial, so it's a feature I don't miss. It does have 2 way speakerphone, which sounds good.
3. The screen on the 8610 is excellent with it's 65000 color LCD. The 8500 had, I think 4 or 6 colors that the back light would be, but it was very hard to see the screen. The colors on the 8610 are very vibrant, and pictures good.
4. The 8500 didn't offer any games. I use my cell phone to amuse myself when bored, so not having games was a big negative. The 8610 has blackjack, which is super funa dn easy to play, and Magic Hexa, which is a Tetris-esque game. The Magic Hexa game I don't like at all, and would rather had Tetris, like on my K7 Rave.
5. Size. The 8610 is actually a bit bigger than the 8500, and I like that. I was always losing the 8500(ultimately lost in a pile of leaves, to be damaged by weather). The 8610 is the perfect size to me, comfortable for talking, the keypad is a good size, and easy to use. Plus the outside has more buttons-one to light the external screen. Also, the charger isn't the little rubber piece you had to take out to charge the phone, this 8610 uses the same type my K7 Rave uses. Now for the gripes- It has the capabilities for wallpaper and screensavers. They do offer you a few wallpapers, but only one screensaver. I found a wallpaper I like, but I don't like the single screensaver. Virgin is so gung-ho on offering "hip" ring tones, why can't they make wallpaper and screesavers available?
The 8610 comes with 5 ringtones, which sound neat. I had listened to a few online, and was excited to be able to get actual songs. Once downloaded, the songs didn't sound so great. The polyphonic ring tones sound great though. The rings are rather quiet, but I usually have my phone on vibrate, so that's a minor point.
Virgin Mobile has internet links to such things as MTV, VH-! and Comedy Central. Geared towards teens, this doesn't interest me, an almost 30 year old business professional. I would like it if Virgin would open the internet access so I could check email, eBay, etc. That's not a fault of the phone though.
I toyed with getting the "Slider", but after reading reviews, and looking at it in person, it seems to be more of a "fad" phone. Overall, I am very please with my 8610. I feel it was worth the money for features and usage. I would recommend this phone if you want something a little higher end. If just testing the waters, check out the K7 Rave, it's also a great phone.

A GREAT Phone

I had this phone for 1 whole year now and its a great phone only that some places you can't get any reception. Then Cons on this phone is that the keys are VERY small,If you don't put this phone on phone lock it tends to call people in your call list. Some Pros are the battery lasts a VERY long time, Very good color display, and clear hearing ringtones. But the plus of this phone is that its very durable. I have to tell you that I'm impressed that my phone is still in great shape after droping it down stairs, cement, and even my sister throwing it across the room once were it hit the wall. If you want a phone that will last you a while buy this phone.

not to great

It looks great, but there are a few major problems with this phone.
I have NEVER had this many dropped calls and I've had t-mobile for 2 years.
The screen tends to freeze and you have to wait a few seconds to use it.
The vibrate function is very weak.

Worst phone I've ever had

I have had A LOT of phones in the last 5 years, and this one is the worst, by far! I love T Mobile but I can't believe they support this piece of junk product. The only reason I give it one star is because there *IS* no lower option.

The phone drops calls constantly. With no warning. Even when you are in a good service area.

The phone shuts off constantly and randomly. You could be in a great service area or even a very poor one, it does not matter. Mine shuts off when it is sitting on a desk in a GREAT service area with no one touching it or even being NEAR it.

It is SLOW. It takes FOREVER to start up. And if you type faster than a first grader, FORGET text messaging on this thing. It takes so long for each letter to register that it is LAUGHABLE. Every other phone I have ever used registers the letters the second you type them. Not this phone! And if you type faster than it can display the letters (which most kindergartners can), the phone will go spastic and shut down on you.

The battery life absolutely SUCKS. I have to charge it every day, sometimes twice a day if I have a heavy call volume in the morning/early afternoon.

If you are thinking about buying this phone, DON'T!! It is horrible. Do not listen to the good reviews, especially the ones that deny the shut-down problem. All you have to do is call T Mobile Customer Care and inquire about the phone. Ask if there are any noted problems with the phone, and they will tell you plainly that there *IS*, in fact, a noted problem with the phone shutting down.

The worst thing about the phone is that it actually functions pretty well for the first month or so. After a month of use, it goes straight downhill without warning. So you will never know you have problems until just after your 14 day trial period is over, and then you will have to keep the phone for a whole year, like I did.

My contract is over now - FINALLY! - so I am, at long last, eligible for a free upgrade. I am going to get rid of this piece of junk TOMORROW.

Do not buy this phone. You will regret it.

wonderful phone

I got this phone about two weeks ago, and so far, it's amazing! This is my first cell phone so I really don't know how good it is compared to others.PROS:
-big & bright color screen
-radio
-loudspeaker
-QWE RTY keypad
-loud volumes
-lots of different ring tones to choose from.. 44 i believe?CONS:
-it has only 2 games. my sister has a Nokia 3100 and she has 4 games
-quite big compared to today's cell phones
-my friend has a motorola t720 and her phonebook is way better than this nokia's.
-needs to use the given earphone in order to listen to the radio, even when you're playing it over the loudspeaker
-boring wallpaper.. there isn't much that can be cusomtized.as far as reception goes.. it's awful at my house. Normally it doesn't even have any reception. But everywhere else I go, it's a full 7 bars..Another problem I'm having right now is that the backcover is starting to sqeak like the Motorola flip phones. I'm not sure if I'm going to change my phone yet. If I do though, it's definately going to be another Nokia.

DO NOT BUY...unless your willing to do without

I bought the E715 about 5 days ago(April 19) and i turn on the phone without a problem no big deal..about 45 minutes after turn on 1 battery mark is gone, another hour another one is gone and it takes about an easy 3 hours for the phone to start flashing(LOW BaTT) the other problem i have faced was the camera being alot worse then the V205. The T722i by motorola is horrible! no service Camera stinks! i could draw a picture better then that but the camera on the E715 dims in and out and shows loss of perfection. but other then that I found the AOL I.M built in to be a great feature as well as all of the pictures and everything else..if your willing to bare with the camera and battery then i recommmend this phone but if your looking for a small light weight phone with a camera than go with the V300

Screen problem

Although 2 or 3 years old, this is a very nice phone, and with phones today having cameras and walkie talkies and whatnot, this phone is actually smaller than most of the phones on the market today.

The problem is that the screen does go dead. Just like the other reviewers, I lost my screen after two years, and I have to turn the phone all the way off and all the way on again to get it back.

But that's not the worst part. The worst part is that you then have to deal with Sprint customer service. I called their independent insurance provider, who told me they couldn't replace the phone unless I went to a store to have it repaired first. After waiting two hours I finally got them to put in a new screen. Three days later, the screen died again. I fully expect to get the runaround again from the insurer.

Ugh.

Have had this phone since May, 2004. Like the size but do wish it had the caller ID info on the outside so have to open the phone to see who was calling. The number pad sometimes feels awkward and not so easy to use. Easy to hear parties and clear sound. Enjoy downloading ringers, etc to give lots character to the phone!

All depends on your luck

I have had this phone with T-Mobile plan for 6 months now. As Amazon was offering a great deal on it, I and 2 of my friends bought it together.

First friend's experience:
He is happy with phone. Works great. Reception is great. He gets great singals in his house and other confined palces.

My experience:
Very bad signal strength. In the same room where my above mentioned friend has a great singal strength, my phone is totally out of signals. And now, the display has developed a patch. Perhaps LCD has burnt out. I called Sony for repaire. They want me to mail it to some place and I will have to be without phone for 8-10 days. They are not willing to provide a replacement.

Second friend's experience
His phone went dead just in two days. He got a replacement. That wend deat also. He got a third phone and he has OK signal strength (not really great, not bad either).

One common problem that we all have faced is that during some operations it freezes completely and we have to reboot the phone (I guess some bug in phone OS)
